{EDIT: please see our response to the 9/21/09 revised management plan}
On Sept. 3, 2009, Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) released its recommended, revised management plan for improving visitor experiences at Apex Park. The Colorado Mountain Bike Association (COMBA) believes the plan needs substantial revision in order to be fair and equitable to mountain bikers. To that end, COMBA is actively engaging JCOS and hopes to reach a solution which benefits our cherished Open Space parks, land managers, and all park visitors.
The recommended Apex plan needs approval from the Open Space Advisory Committee (OSAC) on October 1st. WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW to ensure that our voices are heard. Please help us encourage JCOS to seriously reconsider this plan by taking these simple steps:
- Attend the OSAC meeting on October 1, 2009 at 7pm where the management plan will be presented (700 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden, CO 80401)
- Call JCOS at 303-271-5925 to voice your concerns.
- Send your concerns to SaveApex@COMBA.org. Make sure to include your full name and the city you live in. Your comments will automatically be routed to appropriate JCOS management along with a copy to COMBA.
- Let your voice be heard through IMBA's Apex Action Alert
- Spread the word! Please make your friends, riding group and local bike shop aware of this serious situation and ask them to get involved.
- There is strength in numbers, please consider joining COMBA.
- Email volunteer@comba.org for other ways to help.

COMBA is asking concerned trail users to meet at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, at the lower Apex Park parking lot to demonstrate their opposition to the plan. Bikers will then ride over to the Jefferson County Open Space Administrative Office, 700 Jefferson County Parkway, Suite 100, Golden, Colo., where the county's Open Space Advisory Committee is scheduled to consider the Apex Park management plan at 7 p.m.

On Sept. 21, 2009, Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) published a revision to its proposed, recommended management plan for improving visitor experiences at Apex Park. The Colorado Mountain Bike Association (COMBA) believes the revised plan—which demonstrates a willingness to compromise—needs further attention; as such, we offer this counter proposal in the spirit of cooperation in order to seek fair and equitable status on behalf of the mountain bike community as a legitimate sub-group of all park visitors. To that end, we appreciate the Open Space staff being open to further stakeholder input before any updated plan is ratified.

September 2009
On Sept. 3, 2009, Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) released its recommended, revised management plan for improving visitor experiences at Apex Park. The Colorado Mountain Bike Association (COMBA) believes the plan should be rejected in its current state, and offers this document as a resource for formulating a better proposal.
On September 9th Jefferson County Open Space released its recommended plan for improving visitor experiences at Apex Park. The proposed plan would significantly restrict mountain bikers' use of Apex Park. At the heart of this proposal is the stated intention to "Eliminate 'downhill biking' (shuttling)" at Apex. To this end the Open Space staff are proposing barring bicycles from going downhill on Enchanted Forest and the lower reaches of the Apex Trail, forcing bikers to climb to the top of Apex Park and then forcing cyclists to climb again up Sluicebox to return to the lower trailhead.
COMBA will be washing bikes for tips (donated to PALS, a no-kill animal shelter) just before & after the mountain bike ride starting at 1pm.
