2013 Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day - Photo Recap

Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day was held on Sunday, October 7th after an excutive decision to move it due to unseasonable cool and wet weather on the scheduled Saturday. Thankfully we did, because on Sunday, the morning started cool, but the sun was out and the sky was blue! More importantly, 54 kids were smiling on bicycles!

The kids arrived at 10:00 for registration and were assigned to teams- named Yeti, Giant, Niner, etc- based on their ages and skill levels. After signing in, they enjoyed breakfast of Kind granola, yogurt, fruit and juice. It was a beautifully sunny day, but temps were in the 40s. So we added hot chocolate to the menu, which was a big hit. The parents enjoyed complimentary coffee from Wash Perk.

After fueling up, the kids took their bikes to be checked out at our mechanic tents. Once their bikes were deemed to be in perfect working condition, we welcomed everyone and announced the workshop rotation. The kids also had time to go to the REI and Leave No Trace booths for activities. Teams then paired up to attend four 10-minute workshops, which included bike handling, rules of the trail, bike maintenance and ecology.

When all the kids had learned how to properly and responsibly ride their mountain bikes, the teams each set off for an hour-long ride at Bear Creek Lake Park. They did great, with most teams rolling in LATE for lunch! (this is a first...) Once everyone was back and had worked up an appetite, we began serving the lunch spread of Woody's pizza, subs, Pop Chips, cookies and drinks.

Finally, it was time for prizes! Due to extremely generous donations from our sponsors, we concluded the day by handing out enough raffle items that every kid got at least one prize. Prizes included bike jerseys and shorts, gloves from Pearl Izumi, helmets from Golden Bike Shop, gift certificates from Wheat Ridge Cycle, park admission and event vouchers from Bear Creek Lake Park, first aid kits and head lamps from Hi Altitude Sales and Consulting, back packs and shirts from REI and much more. The kids all also each got a grab bag which included a water bottle, carabeener, and stickers from REI and bars from Kind and Clif Bar.
